Gary Richard Bailey is a well-known TV persona in South Africa, presenting football on Mnet's SuperSport. He enjoyed a successful playing career in both England and South Africa - and is also a rare breed of educated footballer, with a Bsc in Physics and an MBA from Henley in Oxford.

Gary was born in Ipswich (England) where his dad, Roy (from whom Gary got his soccer guidance and inspiration) played for the Ipswich team that won the English league title in 1961/62 - His dad emigrated to South Africa to continue playing soccer, and Gary grew up in Johannesburg, going to school at King Edwards. Roy then became manager of Cape Town City and provided Gary with expert coaching at the club, and Gary finished his schooling at Rondebosch Boys High in Cape Town. Gary then returned to Johannesburg to study Civil Engineering at Wits University (his Man Utd team mates often referred to it as Half-Wits Univeristy:)) and played for 2 years in the Wits first team.

After representing South Africa in 1978, Gary decided to try his luck in Europe and after going on trial with Manchester United in 1977, he was signed by Dave Sexton. Gary went on to play 373 competitive games for the Red Devils, winning 2 FA cup medals in 1983 (and making a crucial last minute save from Gordon Smith) and 1985, losing an FA cup final in 1979 and a league cup final in 1983, and reaching one European semi final. He also played on 2 occasions for England, and probably would've played many more times but for the fact that he had 2 of the all time greatest keepers in front of him, Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence.

However, he developed a serious knee injury, while on England duty at the 1986 Mexico World Cup, and after several knee operations, and 5 games for the new manager Alex Ferguson, he retired and returned to South Africa. Gary did manage 2 more years for local glamour club Kaizer Chiefs, during which time the team won 5 trophies.

For the last 20 or so years, Gary has been one of the main presenters on Supersport (beamed to over 40 countries throughout Africa) soccer coverage, and was also an Ambassador for South Africa's world cup bid. He currrently gives exciting presentations on "Sales performance under Pressure" based on playing as a keeper (most pressurised position in the team) for Manchester United, one of the most famous clubs in the world. He also presents on Leadership under pressure, with many learnings coming from his former manager, the great Sir Alex Ferguson.

Gary grew up in Johannesburg and Cape Town, studying at Wits University on a scholarship and played for Wits for 2 years. He then joined Manchester United in 1977 and less than a year later became their number one goalkeeper, playing 373 competitive matches, playing in 2 European semi-finals and winning 2 FA cup medals.

During that time, he completed a BSc in Physics in Manchester. He played for England from 1978 to 1986 and was part of the 1986 world cup squad that made the quarter finals in Mexico. During the 86 world cup, Gary seriously injured his knee and retired from top class football at the comparitively young age of 28. He returned to South Africa to play for Kaizer Chiefs for 2 years during which time the team won 5 trophies.

After a final retirement, Gary turned his attention to the media and became the anchor soccer presenter at Supersport, covering the 1990, 94, 98 and 2002 world cups. He has been one of Southern Africa’s top speakers for the last 12 years. He has also completed an MBA from Henley in Oxford. He was one of the ambassadors for South Africa’s soccer world cup bid, travelling around Asia and Europe with Danny Jordaan, and being present at the final announcement in Zurich. He now focuses on delivering top class presentations on "Sales performance under Pressure" where he uses lessons learnt from playing keeper (the most pressurised position in the team) for one of the biggest clubs in the world, Manchester United, and "Leadership under pressure" based on his former manager, the great Sir Alex Ferguson
